What is topology optimization?

Definition

Topology optimization is a computational method that decides where material should go inside a given design space, for given loads, supports and constraints. It usually runs a finite element analysis at every iteration and updates a material density in each element, producing free-form layouts that engineers use as a starting point for lightweight structural design.

Example

For a bracket, an engineer meshes the space the part may occupy, applies the loads and supports, and asks for the stiffest layout that uses a set fraction of the volume. The SIMP method pushes each element toward solid or empty; the resulting load path is then redrawn for manufacturing and checked with a full analysis.
